Hello world!

Welcome to my blog. Here I will give some tips for leaders of Unitarian Universalist congregations, share my thoughts about current issues facing churches, or tell jokes I’ve heard.

One of the best new resources I’ve come across is Peter Steinke’s new book – Congregational Leadership in Anxious Times: Being Calm and Courageous No Matter What. Doesn’t that sound like a winner?

Peter Steinke understands congregations to be dynamic, living systems. Anxiety occurs every day as we react [or respond, or refuse to] to change, to new ideas, to different conditions,  or… you get the picture. If leaders will follow the suggestions in this book, their congregations will still experience anxiety, but the chances of anxiety taking over will be lessened. Here’s an example: “In case of emergency, take your own pulse first!” In other words, if anxiety is rising, a wise leader will know her/his own limits and the limits of others; have clarity about her/his own values; take stands and make decisions courageously; and stay connected to others, despite it all. [pp 44-45]

The book is published by the Alban Institute www.alban.org and can be purchased there.

Perfect! Short and to the point, and very helpful. Can’t wait to hear some of the jokes.
